This is ultimately a safety issue, not a parking issue. Even those who oppose removing parking, agree traffic moves too fast, large trucks using often cross the yellow line, and the road is generally unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians. By preserving the parking in front of only 12 homes and excluding the addition of bike lanes, nothing will change regarding the current 7,700 Average annual daily traffic, and safety for other road users. By adding bike lakes along this stretch of Barton and narrowing the vehicle lanes the city will both add a missing link between the bike lanes east of Pontiac trail to the boardwalk at Longshore, as well as aid in enforcing the 25mph speed limit by providing a visual friction. If the city is seriously concerned about safety of all road users, then adding a bike lane buffer would be more effective then irregular on street parking. Re configurations such as are proposed are inline with the City's commitment to Vision Zero.
