We ask for your full support when considering this project. While searching for a space for our business, we heard that the 1st floor of 100 S 4th Ave was going to be reconfigured into retail space. We were hesitant, as the intersection at 4th and Huron - and that stretch of Huron in general - has little retail curb appeal. While debating, we heard lots of chatter from townies that the area had been overlooked for decades, the awning outside our building was a perennial eyesore, and that pedestrians do everything they can to avoid crossing or walking Huron because it feels oversized, neglected, and lacking in amenities like trees, trash receptacles and seating. With the suggested renovations, this part of downtown could transition from being an avoided strip to an integrated retail corridor that unites downtown and Kerrytown. From the perspective of a small new business owner, I can tell you that these these changes will have very real and tangible impacts on our future as a business.
As a representative of the Ann Arbor YMCA, we strongly advocate for a full stop light at the intersection of Third and Huron. A large amount of pedestrian traffic crosses there, including young children (classrooms of 12 or more 2-4 year olds...), older adults and those with diversabilities. Drivers remain uncertain of their role at the current light system, and we frequently observe "close calls", scared pedestrians and impatient or flustered motorists. This is a safety concern for an intersection with ever growing use by pedestrians. Thank you.
Arbormoon Software, a tenant of the effected portion of Huron St, and myself the owner and a 4th ward resident of the city of Ann Arbor strongly support this project. Huron St is the least walkable street in our downtown, and the DDA has done a good job of working with the effected parties to design this project. I'm especially excited about the possibility of on street parking during off peak traffic times. This is a great way to provide a little more parking and also slow traffic down. I think the changes proposed in this project will make Huron St a safer street for our staff, and the greater Ann Arbor community as well as making the street a more welcoming road for one of the primary roads into our downtown. Thank you for your consideration of this important project.
