DS-1 24-1883 Resolution to Approve a Grant Contract with the Michigan Department of Transportation for Engineering Services for the Safety Extension of Runway 6/24 at the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport ($623,200.00)
I strongly support this resolution to approve engineering services for the safety extension of runway 6/24 at the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport. As a hangar tenant and aircraft owner at the Ann Arbor airport I believe it is prudent for Ann Arbor City Council to approve engineering planning for this project to enhance the safety and utility of the primary runway, which has been in the same configuration since it was originally paved in 1958. With completion of the Environmental Assessment (EA) Study and recent Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) in accordance with State and Federal Law, the process started with the 2008 Airport Layout Plan and initial 2010 EA Study can finally move forward to detailed planning. My personal experience as a pilot, a flight instructor, and a former aircraft mishap investigator lead me to support the runway 6/24 safety extension project. I hope Ann Arbor City Council will do the same. Thank you for your consideration.
Dear council members,
The proposed extension is critically important the the Ann Arbor community. When comparing city of similar size, and those with Universities as significant as U-M, we are underserved by our small airport. Therefore, the modest extension is helpful.
A careful study was conducted, and the preferred alternative is cost effective. Allowing for better services will surely attract vendors and increased revenue to the city. Therefore, the members make will make a financially wise decision when approving this resolution.
The proposal also enhances safety by providing better visibility to one of the runway ends, and allowing a better safety margin for larger airplanes. The members therefore should be confident of their decision with regard to safety of operations.
The environmental impact is minimal, and surrounding neighborhoods (where I reside) will see no change. The type of airplanes and traffic remain the same.
Thank you.
