I think it was the Winter of 2016, I was driving home from work. On Division at that weird intersection at the Broadway Street Bridge, I saw an older man, standing on the sidewalk, holding a dog leash. Blood streaming from his forehead down his face. I stopped my truck in the street to see if I could help. He fell in the median. I tried to convince him that I could give him and his dog a ride home or help however I could. I offered my hand out to take the dog leash. He pulled away. I realized I was making him anxious. I was anxious myself as I was blocking traffic. He said he lived just up the stairs on High St. I let him walk away alone but immediately regretted it. I frequently wondered if he was OK. In 2020 I found out that he was, but he fell again, in the same spot and died this time. His name was Dick Derick. His dog was Sammy. Today I found out that Ann Arbor policy is to basically neglect snow clearing on city-owned sidewalks, like that median. That policy killed him.
