DC-1 22-0022 Resolution Condemning Antisemitism

With the rise of antisemitism nationally in general and in our city in particular, and with the 18-year history of antisemitic weekly "protests" outside Beth Israel Congregation, it is imperative that the City Council pass this resolution unanimously. The “protesters” are a blot on the entire city. Unanimous passage of this resolution would be an important first step in curbing and ending antisemitism in our city.

As Jews across this nation are increasingly targets of hate speech and acts of violence, it is critical that we condemn antisemitism in all its forms. Ann Arbor must not turn a blind eye to those who traffic in extremism and hate; rather we must clearly condemn all antisemitic words and actions that undermine the values our city holds dear. I fully support this resolution, and I thank Mayor Taylor and members of the Council for bringing it forward.

Given the current climate nationally and locally of increasing antisemitism I support the passage of this resolution. Our community and especially worshippers of Beth Israel congregation have been subjected to decades of badgering as they enter the building to worship and celebrate special occasions. Also, for students on campus who are exploring new ideas the antisemitic threats are real, stressful and disruptive to promoting civic values of open dialogue that promote problem solving and solutions that improve our world.

Thanks for bringing this resolution forward.
