I strongly believe Ranked Choice Voting improves our democracy.

While there are many benefits to Ranked Choice voting, I think the best example to start with is how single-choice votes may mean the will of the voters isn't reflected in election results. For example, if 60% of voters prefer free cheese but split their votes between two free cheese candidates so that they each receive 30% of of the vote, the no-free-cheese candidate with 40% of the vote will win. Ranked Choice voting allows for the free-cheese voters to rank both of their candidates before the no-free-cheese candidate, and thus the outcome better reflects voters preferences.

As we've seen in the recent Ranked Choice New York City primary election in June and throughout academic studies, Ranked Choice Voting increases voter engagement, as reflected in higher Democratic turnout than the previous two mayoral primary elections in New York City, as well as its most diverse city council in the city's history.
