DC-11 20-0985 Resolution to Endorse HB 4738 and the Creation of a Statewide Crosswalk Law

I oppose this effort to weaken Ann Arbor's crosswalk law, which is in line with other states. Ann Arbor should be a leader within the State on pedestrian issues; including ensuring cars must stop while people are waiting at the curb. Elderly/disabled/kids should not have to step in front of moving vehicles (and hope they are watching) to activate the "stop" requirement.

There has been misleading information that pedestrian injuries/deaths within Ann Arbor have increased, but that does not take into account general national increase due to more economic activity.

Trends in progressive cities are to IMPROVE pedestrian and bike facilities, making them more walkable and safer, and that needs to be done in Ann Arbor. This resolution does not clearly do that. Ann Arbor should not take a step backward.

Perhaps post the stop requirement and associated fines for not stopping at a crosswalk at major entrances to the city, as well as emphasizing we take speeding enforcement seriously.
