If Ann Arbor is to move swiftly to a clean, renewable energy future, please include solar panel charging for all locations for which it is appropriate. Otherwise, the electric vehicles will be powered by coal and natural gas, and nuclear energy from power plants located in Southwest Detroit and in Monroe. Ann Arbor may then have a locally clean environment, but our regional neighbors will likely experience an increase in the fossil fuel emissions based on greater demand from EV charging.
Please include designs for the installation and use of solar powered EV charging stations in every location possible, to reduce our local carbon emissions and the emissions that will otherwise poison the front line neighborhoods that experience carbon emissions and other noxious vapors, as well as the risk of a nuclear accident.
Thank you for your work on the Electric Vehicle Parking Ordinance. I recommend the last line of the proposal be strengthened. K. "It is recommended that EV charging be powered by a renewable energy source". In my opinion the proposal should require a certain number of parking spots (or all) be powered by solar energy paired with EV chargers. The justification is two fold 1) Solar powered EV chargers form a truly carbon zero transportation system helping us to get to A2Zero. 2) I believe there are significant revenue opportunities. EV drivers (myself included) would gladly pay additional costs to charge at solar powered EV chargers. At a minimum all city owned parking facilities should be upgraded to solar paired with EV charging. With the projected increase in EV's in the near future, I believe solar powered EV chargers would attract people from outside Ann Arbor and provide a source of incremental revenue for the city and its businesses. I commend the energy commissioners and others for their hard work on the EV readiness ordinance, and I support it. But I think it's important that the EV chargers be powered by renewable energy, in other words photovoltaics. In the published presentation I noted that at least one energy commissioner also had this view. Such a requirement would obviate any need for DTE to boost electrical capacity. More importantly, it would help further the city's A2Zero carbon neutrality goals. Developers will not like it, because it adds costs, but the extra expenditure would be minimal in the context of overall project costs. We must all pay our share to reach carbon neutrality.
